Become a Better Learner - Train UGLY

This week's blog is going to be one less about swimming and more about the capacity to learn. In the past, we've talked a lot about the mental side of swimming (and life) during our mental series. Check it out HERE - mindfulness, visualization, the growth mindset, etc. However, outside of these points, we still have to learn how to LEARN. How can we become a better self, one that is dynamic and freeform and able to build upon predisposed schemas? Outside of just being malleable, pliable, plastic, or whatever other adjective I can think of about flexibility, there has to be some element of GRIT. For the sake of this post, I'm going to make "GRIT" an acronym - Growth, Resilience, Ingenuity, Tenacity. Pillars of our learning experience that allow us to be tough. Applying this to today's topic, it's time to talk about learning how to TRAIN UGLY, get down and dirty and not be afraid when the going gets tough. Our performance in any facet of our lives is graded upon statistical analysis married to subjective observation. But, behind the curtain of these analyses is our preparation. Doctors don't become great doctors without knowing their physiology and anatomy. Basketball players don't shoot 85% from the free throw line without taking free throws in practice (A LOT of them). And YOU should not expect to garner serious performance in the pool without training HOW YOU EXPECT TO RACE.  You may have unlimited potential, but it remains just that without work. Preparation = performance. Again, this applies to all avenues: every other sport, work life, hobbies that we desire to perform at a high level (I'm looking at you, "scratch golfers"). 
 
Fact of the week :  With every valley comes the next peak to climb. Everest's summit is not achieved in a solo journey. It takes a village, or however the saying goes. Trust in yourself, trust in each other, and create the competitive environment that you want to see. Train UGLY, get DIRTY, take RISKS. Being your best you isn't a perfect science, nor is it always the prettiest journey.  Enjoy the long haul while picking up the details along the way. Stay tuned and check out YouTube for more! 
 
How does my child move up? Come to every swim class, bring your progress report, earn those stickers, and ask your child's instructor or location's deck manager if you have questions.
 
How do I move up? Attend as many of your classes as possible, communicate with your instructor on your struggles, goals, and where you're at in our curriculum. We also have many adults who purchase a gym membership to 24 Hour Fitness or LA Fitness while they are taking lessons so they can practice 2-3 times between classes.
